Fantastic piece. You are truly channeling my spring fever. Today I wore a pink shirt to my office that overlooks an expectant Camden Yards. I was filling out my Masters pool and ordering some Hendricksons for a trip in a few weeks to the Beaverkill in Roscoe. Thanks for so thoughtfully giving voice to so many of life’s pleasures.....
Feeling particularly optimistic after a few days of sun here, I mentioned to my wife over breakfast this morning, that for my birthday at the end of the month I'd like a fly-fishing lesson. Whenever I've raised the subject before she's sighed at the thought of me having another interest and reminded me of the golf clubs, the sailing weekends, the Pashley bicycle, the gardening books, and the Mallmann-esque collection of barbecue equipment of hobbies past. She must have been feeling bouyant by the prospect of Spring too however because she didn't say no. I'm hoping the weather holds up.
Kids too you say? Hmm, if those dark clouds do start to form and dampen my prospects, that's just the kind of lure that might work on a long-suffering wife/mother-of-five who hasn't had an empty house to herself on a Saturday afternoon for a long time.
Trying to use your 90% rule for recommendations in the new year, I have found Teutonic winery “Candied Mushroom” Riesling to be exceptional. I purchased a bottle from Henry and Son in Mpls based on a staff rec and have been on the Riesling bandwagon since. Might not be Masters worthy, but worth seeking out.
Always look forward to spring in Vancouver, otherwise known as the first top-down Saab drive of the year. Thankfully the Swedes know their heaters, because the sun in the apartment is never the sun outside, temperature-wise.
Most Riesling in stores these days is not as sweet as it used to be. You can ask whoever works there for something dry with enough acidity. You just want to avoid Kabinett.
Wonderful piece, David.
Thanks Dad!

Nice! It's all coming together.

England is a great place to learn and for beginners to fish. And for kids too!

“Men eating ice cream in public is not traditionally a celebrated look”..... LOL!!!
A particularly good bulletin. Lovely, even profound, but « légère »
Thanks Anne!
Thank you for this. Lovely way to start the week.
Thank you David for these words that point us forward to warmer and longer days to come.
This made me want Dairy Joy during short term again.
Well done.

Beautiful writing.
As others have said, a great start to the week.

Hope abounds in Spring. Such a wonderful time of year.
Lovely piece that matches my mood as spring develops. Out of curiosity, what does the line about ‘pictures of ramps’ refer to? I feel out of the loop!
The humble ramp, wild garlic, that is a wonderful spring food that ends up being photographed too much for its own good!
Ah interesting, apparently its called ‘wild garlic’ over here in Ireland and the rest of Europe. I’ll probably start to see it everywhere now!
Could definitely be an American social media phenomenon that hopefully you'll avoid!
Any advice on how to spot a bottle of Riesling that isn’t dessert-level sweet? Always a challenge! Happy Masters week.

Endless photos of ramps got me good, having just planted bulbs in the forest floor near my house, yesterday.
