The tenderness of anticipation and the pleasure and swift disappointment of attainment. Thank you, David, for articulating what we feel but can’t quite articulate. Another lovely post.

Perfect timing...loved this. London has just started to finally feel like autumn with the drop in temperature... which necessitated the much longed for return to the front rail of my Harris Tweed (Connolly of course) and Xmas inspired Tartan (Ralph gets it so right) Big Coats to keep out the chill.

"I like the anticipation and even the waiting."

Simply & beautifully stated. Some things are worth the time. We live in a world of myriad shortcuts and "hacks", a term I despise, and too often artfulness is scarified at the altar of convenience. Happy fishing.

Cheers.

Nice article this morning David. We closed the cabin on the St. Croix River this last weekend going through the complex task of turning off the water and draining the pipes before a Minnesota winter. It is always bittersweet, cabin closing and boats to storage...but then I start looking forward to Holidays and it made me smile. Here's to the smiles and good times over the winter, spring awaits!

Well written David, enjoy the Catskills!

I am chasing chinook and coho salmon on the Chilliwack river in British Columbia. Come December, I will shift focus to the forever-elusive steelhead. This write up reminded me to hold on to what we love come this time of year and always show gratitude for the experiences these beautiful creatures provide us. Cheers!

Nice piece, David. There has to be an ending, or nothing would matter.

Beautifully written. However, thank god for the new New York State year-round trout season so those of us who live around the Catskills can enjoy the solitude of not seeing many others on the creeks before the big hatches begin next spring.

Am I alone in first thinking this was an announcement that The Contender itself was closing up? Glad to have been wrong.

Love the piece. There’s just a short bit of the year when you get to fish with golden leaves falling around you. The fishing might be wrapping up for the season but the Catskills can be great throughout the winter. There are a few great properties that only get more charming when a burning fireplace is as much a necessity as it is ambiance. The Debruce and Scribners come to mind but there are many others.

Feel the same way regarding the Rohmer movies- can’t watch those when it’s cold out! What are some of your other favorite “fall/winter movies”? Always gotta watch McCabe and Mrs Miller and Doctor Zhivago in dreary January myself.

David, I love your writing. I am very fortunate (and possibly psychotic) to be able to fish for wild trout year round here in the mountains of southwestern VA (Roanoke) because of some really nice tailwater fisheries. I do appreciate the bittersweet aspect of a season of not being able to fish and wonder if I am missing out on something.
