Maybe my favorite piece you've written David. You paint a powerful picture in the most economical way. In lesser hands a piece like this could become almost masturbatory(had to be said, sorry!) but your utter lack of superfluous details was refreshing. Well done!
I want to thank you - not only for your personal memories but for your links to The Times. I'm from The Midwest and went to School out here as well. Despite that, I have a few friends that went to Sarah Lawrence or Columbia or Barnard and, when I went to visit, they were bored by the prospect of lunch at 21. Having not had a chance to visit, I feel like you gave a clear picture of what made those trips special.
On Lorenzo Robinson: “The Rev took that job, and he elevated it.” I love reading inspiring stories of people doing memorable things that others believe to be meaningful...
Another wonderful piece. Thank you, David. Does a publisher "cancel" a commission pre or post advance? Is there any amount of discussion, or is the hammer simply dropped on the author? I hope that at least some of that content has made its way to your other publications.
Closing Time
I wonder how many more casualties there will be?
