I first wrote this list of what men should own almost two years ago and it’s the most widely read newsletter I’ve sent. Why is that? Well, men are looking for a dependable arsenal of what they should have and what they should wear. We all want a baseline.
What I included was straightforward and classic—like the old unstructured sport coat—but I didn't get too granular about which sport coat. Well, it feels like time to revisit the list and to get more specific.
Here’s a refined list—yes, there are links!—of what should be proudly hanging in your wardrobe.
1/ A Definitive Suit. This should be dark blue or dark grey and give you pleasure every time you behold it. This is the definition of an investment piece, a tired phrase which often justifies a high price. In this case it’s worth it. This suit should come from a place that believes in the importance of a good suit and that sells a lot of them: Ralph Lauren or Sid Mashburn are the places to start. If you can afford to go to a tailor then go to one.
