Just a small newsletter this weekend.
I have a story in today’s Financial Times, in HTSI about a Scottish road trip. Looks better in print (with wonderful photos, like the one above, by James Harvey-Kelly), but you can read it here. And you can see other HTSI stories we worked on, from Montana to Japan, here.
In a recent Air Mail I wrote about the great restauranteur Ken Aretsky, the last front of house man.
Oh, and did this piece for Robb Report about my favorite stylish films.
The football season properly starts on Sunday and normally I share some stories about sad football teams. You can read about vintage Vikings tragedies and the fine art of losing. I can’t bring myself to do it again, since my star-crossed team has already gone ahead and their annual disastrous injury out of the way ahead of time and now we have another lost season on our hands. That’s what inspired another question: Why sports, why?
Last year Detroit has entered the realm of sufferers after their confounding loss in the NFC Championship they graduated from mere garbàge team into the hallowed club of truly tragic. We're glad to have you, good people of Detroit! But what’s this? Detroit is a possible Super Bowl team? I implore Lions fans to remain calm and to take this one step at a time. High expectations can ruin you. I warned you last year, and we know what happened. But I’ll be with you in spirit, Lions and Bills fans.
Maybe this is the year some sad fans with get their happy ending. But don’t hold your breath.
