I’m working on a new theory, portentously titled: The Three Tiers of Dressing. Over time I realize I’ve developed these tiers where I mentally file my clothes. These tiers help me manage my wardrobe more strategically. It’s a slightly clinical, but ultimately enjoyable way to see these matters more clearly. And I think it can help simplify your life too, in terms of buying clothes, maintaining a wardrobe and navigating a budget.
New theories are always exciting. So here goes.
TIER ONE. “The Few, The Proud, The Expensive”
Seriously tailored. Special things to wear when you really dress up for an event that matters. A hand-made dress shirt. A formal suit. Your best pair of suede shoes you don’t wear in the rain. I actually wear Tier One less than you might think. While these are great to obsess over, most men don't need many clothes in this category. This tier matters, since it’s what you wear to the opera or your favorite restaurant in Paris. If you don’t have many clothes in this tier then they have to work together—don’t add to it lightly! Thankfully a grey flannel suit and pale blue shirt are perfectly aligned.
