I did this trip in 1999. By train from Paris to Bilbao — but really to a small Basque village of Neguri for my cousin’s wedding then on to Madrid and spending a week in each place before moving on to Sevilla, then Barcelona, Nice, Monte Carlo, the Italian Riviera etc. I read “The Sun Also Rises” on the first leg, shared with my travel companion, then on to “Death in the Afternoon” and then to “Tender is the Night” on the Côte d’Azur (I know it’s Scott Fitz but fits perfectly) and eventually “Farewell to Arms” for the Northern Italy stage of the junket.
What a fantastic itinerary. I called Black Tomato to inquire about this itinerary or something similar. I'm thinking a journey next Spring would be wonderful.
Last June, after Pitti, we went to Paris for a few days. I constructed a walking tour of some of the bars, cafés, and locations Hemingway mentions in the first half of the novel. Unfortunately, the evening we picked was June 21, when all of northern France seems to converge on Paris for a night of revelry and anarchy. But we managed to visit a few key spots including dinner at one of my favorites, Brasserie Lipp.
I think this Black Tomato experience would be a fitting way to celebrate a milestone birthday. Thank you for the idea, David.
I did the Hemingway itinerary exactly in reverse with my family last May. Madrid was the pleasant surprise of the trip. Was revisiting Biarritz after about 20 years. Ending in Paris was perfect. I guess we were on to something!

Wow, love it!

It's wild to think that Le Select just opened when Hemingway's novel came out. And now it's a classic.

Madrid is terrific. They're all terrific!
I have a Matisse poster I picked up on a visit to Saint Paul de Vence some years ago. It gives me pleasure every day. Bon voyage.
Happy to see The Culture Page.
Might have to visit New York to take in all of the great offerings.
Thanks Dad. There's a lot going on! Vuillard catalog not out yet either (show ends this week). D
