Traveling imposes sartorial discipline. This is a good thing and an ongoing reminder of how few clothes you actually need. When you’re living out of a bag you’re forced to deal with a limited hand, so play from a position of strength.
I got back from Japan late last night (I’ll be writing about that trip for the newsletter over the next few months), and while I was in Tokyo I wore the same suit every day. I’ve written about a more casual approach to suits before, here and here and probably elsewhere, since it’s an enduring project of mine. And on this trip I was reminded again just how easy and appropriate an easygoing suit can be.
We think of the suit as a rarefied, formal option. And often it is. But it can be more than that. And a good everyday suit turns out to be one of the best things you can own.
Here’s how it works.
