A wardrobe is built over time, but it doesn’t progress in a straight line. Sometimes we strive to make sense of it all. There are inevitably redundancies or absences, misguided experiments or curious indulgences. It can be hard to clear the decks and act on what you need.
This usually occurs to you when you’re staring into the abyss of your wardrobe and kind find the definitive answer when you’re already late for a big event. This is a low morale moment and one we want to avoid. I believe we should invest in the clothes we wear the most often. This is important and should really be the priority. How happy you’ll be when you love your Oxford shirts, suede loafers and whatever else you wear everyday. This is a version of The 90% Rule—spend big on what you wear most often.
But there are moments when you need something specific and rarefied—a tuxedo is a good example. It’s more than just a tuxedo, however. What about a formal suit or dressy sport coat and everything that goes with that? Suddenly my 90% is not helping. It’s time to focus on the 10%. This is hard because you don’t wear this is not something you wear that often.
Here are some ideas so you have a bulletproof wardrobe—when you look inside you won’t come up blank.
-A Definitive Suit. This is a suit that means business. Not corduroy. Not cotton. It could be dark blue. It might even have some structure or even be double-breasted. This is not a suit to lay down in. This suit should sit in your closet like a proud car in a garage—but unlike Cameron’s dad’s Ferrari this thing should be used.
