The suit is supposed to make our lives easier, but too often makes them harder. A good suit simplifies our options, flatters our figure and meets the moment. A bad suit makes us look like we hate our jobs, have been ejected from a bar or are arriving in court against our will. I wrote about this in more technical terms a while back.
Now, like so many other things, when we buy a suit we can aim high or aim low. The middle is harder to find—you can’t just stride into a Brooks Brothers like the good old days. So how should we approach what should be a rite of passage for men of every age?
Let’s consider the issues.
-Assess the Situation. Is this suit professional or celebratory? Are you going to work or getting married? Most first suits are asked to do many things. That’s fine. Start with dark blue or grey. These are the most versatile and really the most flattering. Don’t get distracted by novel eccentricities (no peak lapels please).
