A Sartorial Gambit

thecontender.substack.com

Spring arrives, the weather gets warmer and you break out lighter clothes that go with the year’s first glass of Riesling. You might head into fresh territory—it’s a time of renewal after all. You might feel a little experimental, even daring. Let’s think about possibilities for the rotation that speak to the bolder side of your nature.

-White Jeans. Not new. Not for everybody. Not just for spring. I speak as somebody who can’t wear white jeans (“I think that ship has sailed for you,” my sister told me). But many people close to me are white denim truthers who look great in them. It’s an easy way to brighten your situation, and they don’t seem that wild after the first week. If you’re doubtful then start with…ecru.

-White Jacket. Now here’s something I do know about. Ages ago I received a sample white sport coat with skepticism. I tried it out and ended up wearing it about 100 times over two years. I think a white (cream is actually better) coat doesn’t have to be so finicky. Wear it with a chambray shirt and chinos and old loafers or espadrilles. You don’t want to look like a headwaiter, more like the regular at an outdoor cafe at any of the more remote Italian islands.
