A good bag is more than an accessory and more personal than most clothing. It’s something you carry every day that announces your relationship to function and style. That’s one reason we feel strongly about bags. Hold on, we’re just talking about bags here! But the search for the good bag—the right bag—is real, and when we find one then we hold on to it for a long time.
That’s one reason I’m so excited about the Field Tote, my new collaboration with Ghurka, which comes out today. I already loved their khaki Market Tote, which I’ve carried for years. But as an obsessive, I still had thoughts about some tweaks. The good people at Ghurka understood, because they care about these things too.
The result really is my ideal bag. It’s olive twill, which is durable and water-resistant, with leather trim, which dresses it up and will age beautifully. The bag stays standing and there are useful interior pockets. Crucially, there’s a leather pocket that you can snap across the top of the bag and close it. That makes it easier to carry in the elements or set in overhead bin on a flight.
Every Field Tote is made right in New York City. It was great to see the work carried out by talented craftsmen and -women, in the Flower District. Here’s a little video about making the bag. To be part of the process was, on a basic level, very fun. Sometimes a project comes together and turns out even better than you hope. The Field Tote is a bag that I’m happy to see out in the world, where it belongs.
Hopefully it will be the tote to stop me buying more totes 😂
That video confirms that we need at least a yearly video episode of the Central Division podcast.
